Indigenous Peoples Day

  • UMICS 181 Freedman Crescent Winnipeg, MB, R3T 5V4 Canada (map)

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day, a time to celebrate the unique heritage and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Turtle Island. This day, which coincides with the summer solstice and marks the longest day of the year, has deep cultural significance as many Indigenous groups have historically celebrated their culture and heritage around this time.

National Indigenous Peoples Day is an official day of recognition in Canada, established in 1996 by then Governor General Roméo LeBlanc as National Aboriginal Day and renamed in 2017 to better reflect the contributions of Indigenous Peoples to Canadian society. The celebration honors and acknowledges the rich heritage, cultures, and invaluable contributions of Indigenous communities.
