Our Mission

The University of Manitoba Indigenous Commerce Students  (UMICS) is a student group for those who identify with or have a common interest in enhancing Indigenous culture within the Asper School of Business. As business leaders, we aim to create a sense of community by forging partnerships with organizations within and surrounding the University of Manitoba.

 

Our Beliefs

As members of UMICS, we believe in:

  • Upholding the seven sacred teachings (Humility, Bravery, Honesty, Wisdom, Truth, Respect and Love).

  • Fostering a spirit of reconciliation within the I.H Asper School of Business, The University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba and Canada.

  • Advocating for the rights of Indigenous people in the Canadian business community.

  • Providing Indigenous commerce students with networking and learning opportunities.

 

Membership Eligibility

Membership is open to any current or aspiring Commerce student in the Asper School of Business or the degrees outlined below, regardless of ancestry.

Memberships for UMICS span a full academic year, September 1st to August 31st. Participating members are those that sign up to take part in UMICS’s events, whereas Executive Officers are participating members with the addition of executive duties and expectations as outlined in Section 2 of the UMICS constitution.

All members are voting members of UMICS.

To be an eligible UMICS member, you are:

  • An Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, or Inuit) student at the Asper School of Business.

  • A Non-Indigenous student at the Asper School of Business.

  • An Indigenous (First Nation, Métis, or Inuit) student pursuing a degree in: Economics, AgBiz or Management Studies at the University of Manitoba.

  • A Non-Indigenous student pursing a degree in: Economics, AgBiz, or Management Studies at the University of Manitoba.
